Description

AMAZON SES Solutions (SMTP)

Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES) is a web service meant to simplify sending bulk emails, transactional emails, and notifications to business clients. It’s dependable, elastic, and economical, thus making it a preferred email marketing and communications avenue.

The following are some of how Amazon SES can be used:

# 1. Transactional Emails
– **Use Case**: Order confirmations, password reset emails, or any other notification.
– **Solution**: Use Amazon SES Service Availability with the application by using either the SES API or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. It guarantees that these time-dependent transactional emails reach the inboxes of the respective receivers.
– **Example**: For instance, handling WooCommerce email notifications like order updates can be accomplished using Amazon SES.

# 2. Bulk Email Campaigns
– **Use Case**: Create and send out marketing campaigns via email to many recipients.
– **Solution**: Send bulk marketing emails using Amazon SES. It offers very high throughput rates and enables monitoring of the opened rate, bounce rates, and complaint levels via SES feedback loops
– **Example**: Promotions or information newsletters can be sent out effectively using SES in conjunction with services like MailCsmp or Sendy which has direct integration with SES.

# 3.  Custom Email Domains
– **Use Case**: Avoid using impersonal email addresses, like info@example.com or sales@example.com.
– **Solution**: Amazon SES provides the facility to add and verify your domain, configure DNS records (SPF, DKIM), and also employ custom sending domain which enhances corporate identity and email reachability.
– **Example**: Instead of sending emails from a third-party domain, employees should issue emails from `info@yourcompany.com`.

# 4.  Scalable Email Marketing
– **Use Case**: Sending customized email campaigns to different user segments.
– **Solution**: Carry out business activities and opt for SES together with AWS Lambda, Amazon SNS, or AWS Step Functions for advanced email operations.

Your Amazon SES account has specific sending quotas that limit the number of emails you can send and the rate at which you can send them. These limits ensure that Amazon SES maintains a trusted relationship with email providers, while also helping you gradually increase your email sending volume to avoid sudden spikes that could lead to your emails being blocked by providers.

The key sending limits for Amazon SES are as follows:

– **Sending quota**: This is the maximum number of emails you can send in a 24-hour period. It’s calculated on a rolling basis, meaning Amazon SES checks how many emails you’ve sent in the last 24 hours every time you attempt to send a new email. As long as this total is below your daily maximum, your email will be sent. If your request exceeds the quota, it will be rejected.

– **Sending rate**: This refers to the number of emails Amazon SES can accept from your account per second. While it’s possible to exceed this rate briefly, sustained overuse will result in a lower acceptance rate than your maximum limit.

– **Maximum message size**: The size of an email, including any attachments after they are MIME encoded, also has a limit. For example, a 5MB attachment will grow to about 6.85MB after encoding. To avoid exceeding this size limit and to improve deliverability, it’s recommended to upload large files to cloud storage and include the download link in the email, as SES cannot guarantee successful delivery of large emails due to varying email size policies on different mail servers.

Your SES sending limits vary by AWS Region. If you use SES across multiple regions, each region will have its own quotas.

If your account is in the Amazon SES **sandbox**, you’re limited to sending 200 emails per 24 hours and only 1 email per second. To increase these limits and move to production mode, you’ll need to request production access. When your account is moved out of the sandbox, you can also request an increase in your sending quotas via AWS Support at any time.

A few important notes about SES quotas:

– **Quotas apply to recipients, not emails**: If you send an email to 10 recipients, it counts as 10 emails against your quota. However, it’s recommended to send separate API requests for each recipient, as sending multiple recipients in a single API call could result in the entire request being rejected if it fails.

– **Quota monitoring**: You can monitor your SES quotas through the SES console or API to keep track of your usage.

– **Error handling**: If you reach your quota limits, SES will return specific error messages. You can find more information about these errors and how to resolve them in the SES documentation.

To request an increase in your sending limits, follow the instructions for increasing Amazon SES quotas through AWS Support.
